Ah, Sonja, we hardly knew ye. If she
lives to be a hundred, Sonja Christopher
will forever be able to claim the
distinction, dubious as it may be, of
having been the first castaway ever voted
off of Survivor. It wasn't
terribly difficult to understand why. Some
suggested that she was out of her element
in Borneo, and overmatched when it came to
the physically demanding challenges, an
assertion the 60-something retiree didn't
make much of an effort to dispel.
But Sonja will
also be remembered for something else: she
carted halfway around the world from her
home in California a musical instrument as
her luxury item. It was a ukelele,
and she serenaded her fellow tribal members
with enthusiasm and golden oldies, not the
least of which was Survivor 1's
eventual winner Richard Hatch, who after
returning home graciously made a point
of mentioning Sonja's ukelele playing as
one of the highlights of Pulau Tiga.
